"Our commitment is to provide up to date evidence-based medical and surgical care in diagnosing and treating disorders of the retina and vitreous with a team committed to providing the best possible experience. - Dr. Sandeep Shah
Dr. Sandeep N. Shah is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon. He grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Putnam City High School. He completed his undergraduate education at Oklahoma City University, where he double-majored in Software Engineering and Biological Sciences. He graduated Summa Cum Laude as the university Valedictorian, earning the Letzeiser Gold Medal.
Dr. Shah attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma, where he received his M.D. with Distinction and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as a junior. During medical school, he dedicated considerable time to basic science research in molecular genetics, focusing on ferritin — a protein responsible for iron storage in cells — at the University of Oklahoma Department of Biochemistry and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
He pursued residency training at the renowned Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago, where he was selected by faculty to serve as Chief Resident in his final year. At the Infirmary, Dr. Shah developed a deep appreciation for the complexities of medical and surgical retinal disease and was inspired by his mentors to pursue vitreoretinal surgery as his career focus. He received extensive training in the management of complex ocular trauma at the Infirmary, which served as the designated eye trauma center for Chicago. As a resident, he designed and conducted a randomized clinical trial for diabetic eye disease.
Dr. Shah was selected for a prestigious vitreoretinal fellowship at The Eye Institute at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he also served as a Clinical Instructor in Ophthalmology, teaching residents and medical students. During his fellowship, in addition to managing complex medical and surgical retinal conditions, he gained specialized experience in the management and treatment of ocular melanoma with plaque brachytherapy.
Dr. Shah has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored book chapters, and currently serves as Principal Investigator in multiple national clinical research trials. He has presented his research at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). He has also served as a reviewer for the journals Archives of Ophthalmology and Retina.
After fellowship, Dr. Shah returned home to Oklahoma City to establish a private retina practice dedicated to excellence. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His particular clinical interests include clinical trials, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and vitreoretinal surgery.
Dr. Shah enjoys spending time with his family. He is happily married and has two daughters. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, gardening, and spending time outdoors. He is also a koi fish and pond enthusiast. Last but not least, he is a big fan of the Thunder.
Dr. Shah sees patients at the Edmond, Norman, Stillwater, and Elk City offices. He primarily operates at Oklahoma Surgicare and Summit Medical Center. He also holds staff privileges at Integris Baptist Medical Center.
