Dr. Brian S. Phelps is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon. He grew up near Amarillo, Texas and came to love Oklahoma City during his many visits as a child. He was the first to graduate from college in his family. Dr. Phelps attended Texas Tech University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He is the recipient of eleven academic scholarships. He has published and performed scientific research at Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, the United States Department of Agriculture, The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Dr. Phelps received his M.D. with distinction from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston where he was awarded the Hitoshi Nikaidoh scholarship for humanism in medicine. He developed a passion for the surgical management of retinal disease during his residency training at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. His residency vitreoretinal surgical training volume placed him in the top 1 percentile for graduating U.S. residents.
Dr. Phelps was selected for a highly competitive 2 year vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He gained extensive training in the management of complex retinal disease by providing medical and surgical vitreoretinal services to the largest ophthalmology residency program in the country.
Dr. Phelps is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He actively pursues his research interests as an investigator in national clinical trials on-going at RVC. He offers a wide range of medical and surgical retinal services including the most current intraocular pharmacotherapy and small gauge sutureless vitrectomy.
Dr. Phelps enjoys sports and activities with his wife and two sons. He also enjoys running, fishing, camping, and most outdoor activities. Dr. Phelps is devoted in his work to restore and preserve vision for his patients and is excited to serve the people of Oklahoma. He is accepting new patients in our Edmond, Midwest City, and Norman offices.
